Gaya Chandrasekaran

Memory, nature, and transcendence in color and texture

London-based contemporary artist Gaya Chandrasekaran draws upon the vivid colors and cultural heritage of her upbringing in Chennai, India. Her textured acrylic paintings, layered with palette knives and gilded with gold leaf, evoke depth, movement, and emotion, inviting viewers into contemplative spaces where memory, nature, and transcendence converge.

Chandrasekaran begins each canvas with an idea rather than a fixed outcome. She primes the surface, outlines shapes, and arranges her color palette before letting the process take over. Using abstracted imagery as a starting point, she works with heavy-body acrylics and gel mediums, layering and mixing textures until the work comes alive. Gold leaf is a recurring element — a reflection of her fascination with its color and symbolism of abundance. The process is intensely tangible and cathartic, infusing her practice with joy and fulfillment.

Her work explores universal themes — Quest, Soliloquy, Rebirth, and Nirvana — reflecting key life moments, inner dialogue, spiritual lessons, and the shared search for meaning. Trained in India and at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, Chandrasekaran has exhibited widely across the UK, US, and Europe, with features in Contemporary Art Curator, Artist Talk, and ArtistCloseUp. Her paintings are held in private collections worldwide, including a permanent display at the London Business School, and have been reviewed by London art critic Tabish Khan.
