Fred Lutz

“Nature as language, materials as voices.”

French artist Fred Lutz Malbec approaches nature not as a subject to be depicted, but as a language to be spoken. Her practice draws upon unexpected materials — soot, tarlatan, stone dust, lichens — each carrying its own resonance. Through painting, printmaking, collage, and installation, Lutz shapes these elements into bold, tactile works that transcend the ordinary. What emerges is a body of work where the rawness of matter becomes poetic expression, offered with clarity and intensity to the viewer.

Each of Fred Lutz’s works emerges from an ongoing pursuit of a distinct pictorial language, one woven from forms, textures, and colors. Her practice invites viewers into an abstract and universal vision of nature — a subtle, evocative presence that lingers like a memory. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Cherbourg, Lutz has cultivated an artistic vocabulary that transcends boundaries, shaped as much by her materials as by her surroundings.

Her studio is set within the Manoir du Quesnay in Surtainville, on the Norman Riviera — a thirteenth-century manor steeped in history. Between its weathered walls and stone tower, light shifts across the local stone, creating a setting where time and nature converge. In this atmosphere, framed by a walled garden, Lutz allows the spirit of the place to guide her process. Each work becomes both an experiment and an expression — a tribute to the beauty and diversity of creation, distilled into immersive form.
